Work title: ANIMAL BUILDING (0000901771)

Description:
PROPOSED SCENARIO FOR A PARTIAL-TOTAL ECOLOGY: “YUmen[eco]tec-pharming” 1. SUBJECT[-s] - INHABITANT[-s]: Co-species/Co-substances. ANIMAL BUILDINGS AND THEIR INHABITANTS AS SUBJECTS True Ecology is based on the continuous reciprocity between the subject and its surroundings. In a similar way like a bee is dependent on the nectar from the flowers it bestows, the flower in return is dependent on the bee flying from flower to flower bestowing them and thus helping the species to survive across generations. In this perspective, ecology is not about distinctions between “them and us” but rather to see the subject and the surrounding as one coherent system. The picture of a building as a dead object transform into a building as an integrated part of the living system. This leads to the question: WHAT IF YOUR HOME WAS AN ANIMAL?? This project attempts to create a scenario where the buildings become as much the subject as its residents. In this sense the project points to a series of limits that may turn out to be obsolete – limits such as subject vs. architecture, waste vs. resource and inhabitant vs. host. Therefore the two species of this project are: SPECIES 01: HUMAN with excrement as by-product. SPECIES 02: ANIMAL BUILDING – a genetically engineered species ca. 100 metres tall with human food, water and heat as by-product. In the future, genetics will saturate the building manufacturing on the similar magnitude as serial production did during the Industrial Revolution Animal Buildings will become an educational architecture that with its own construction, explains the ecological process that cycle the surroundings and become part of us. 2. SITE SCENARIO: Relations-Processes SPECIES AS SITE Like living animals, the species of Animal Buildings can move and relocate to places that are unbuildable for fixed buildings. The Animal Buildings and their operating system will be constructed with different results in relation to different locations and environments. Therefore in spite of their mobility Animal-buildings will bring local character to its habitat providing a local identity for the local citizens. Each inhabitant will get to travel with this nomadic building in own cubicle fixed to the Animal Buildings’ shell. Each cubicle can be transported between several Animal Buildings by air and plugged into the buildings system with water, air, food, electricity and waste disposal. The installation and plug-in of these cubicles is performed by the centipedes that swiftly can organize the new cubicles and release the other ones giving them to a gigantic dragon fly that takes the cubicle and inhabitant to another building. Social contact outside of the Animal Building, studying and recreation happen through a multisensory bio-electronic wall display embedded in the skin of each cubicle. 3 TOOLS – Chemical, Technical, Visceral CONNECTIONS AS TOOLS This Animal Building is a living, sensing body with integrated self supportive systems for ventilation, heating and cooling. The building will adjust itself in a similar manner like the human body – for example cooling by sweat and evaporation. This inhabitable living body will not only live off food from the outside environment, but also off its inhabitants’ waste and in return it will provide the right inner climate conditions. In a similar manner the inhabitants will live off the Animal Building’s digestive system and actually being a part of it making the building reciprocally dependent on its inhabitants - symbiosis between inhabitants and host. Waste will cease to be a definition – there will be no waste anymore - there will only be resources. This living Animal Building and its organs will form the link between humans and their surrounding environment. The mobility of such an Animal Building combined with the fact that remote technologies are merging working and living into one condition, can make the vision/idea of a nomadic caravan life come true. The cubicles are in the smart bio-materials, providing bioluminescent light and sound. Through a network of veins the cubicles of the inhabitants are connected to the processing organs of this Animal Building. Some of the connections stop at the cubicle inner surface such as Air and Bio-Electricity while other connections such as Food, Water and Waste are connected directly to the inhabitants’ body. In this perspective the inhabitants’ bodies work together with the Animal Building as its digestive organs thereby making the building dependent on its inhabitants. Otherwise the Animal Building works as a processor: Air is being processed – purified and adjusted to the correct temperature, food and water is being processed in the first of the two stomachs – pre-digested ready for eating and drinking and for washing and flushing as well. The waste goes through the veins into the second stomach for a final digestion before it exits the body of the Animal Building – a process reminiscent of the digestive process of a cows multiple stomachs.
